Is this a family disease?
Addiction is a family disease. Abuse of drugs and alcohol greatly impacts all members of an addict's family regardless of whether or not they they also abuse psychoactive substances. This is indicative of the great emotional , physical, nd social strain that addicts place on their families.
"Even though it was my son that drank until he got sick, putting him in treatment was harder for me than for him. I knew he denied his drinking. I didn't realize that I did too even though I didn't drink myself and that I had almost as many problems as he did."
31-year-old adult child of an alcoholic
The family is often ignored and neglected in the treatment of addictive disease. Continued stress from family problems or troubled family members makes it difficult for the recovering addict to remain abstinent.

Able To Change Recovery
Family Weekend
The Family Weekend provides a two-day opportunity for families and friends of residents in the residential program to learn about addiction, treatment and recovery. They also learn how families are affected by addiction and the post treatment environment. The atmosphere of the Family Weekend is designed to be educational and supportive; not a confrontational or “hot seat” experience.
The goal for the two days is for family members and residents to learn and grow from a series of focused, educational and small group experiences.
Group topics include:
- Learning about the Developmental Stages of Recovery for Families and where your family is in that process.
- Helping you determine what your role might be in your family member's recovery.
- Meeting, sharing and learning from other families' experiences.
- Discovering what steps you can take for yourself for help and support.
Because the Family Weekend program is such a key component to the recovery of the families we serve and demanding schedules have prevented attendance in the past, we have extended the services to allow families to attend one of two available weekend programs during their first 30-day stay at Able To Change Recovery. Please click on our Latest News link for the scheduled dates of the two weekend programs.
The weekend is divided into two parts. The first part of the weekend includes the family and friends with Therapist, Paul Gillane, LMFT. Residents join the weekend proceedings on the following day and together the education and discussion continues. All Family Weekend Attendees have the opportunity to participate in the family art project.
