Outcome Predictors in Alcohol Addiction Treatment

addiction and alcoholism are believed to be a learned behavior that is masking a person's emotional or physical pain. There are almost as many treatments as there are addicts and alcoholics. Educate yourself before making any type of life-changing decison regarding alcoholism, addiction and substance abuse treatment.

Predictors of Outcome in Alcohol Addiction treatment

A research group recently found more than one hundred adults with chronic alcoholism to see who succeeded and who relapsed after an intensive outpatient therapy program. The study participants were recruited from the emergency room and from other inpatient or outpatient programs. Each individual received outpatient therapy for their alcohol use disorder.

Following the therapy, the participants were monitored for relapse by checking for the presence of alcohol in the urine or in the blood. Other help was given as needed if the individual suffered a relapse. Overall, the researchers wanted to determine if there was any way to predict who would relapse and who would not.

The results showed that those who had a more chronic condition were more likely to relapse after addiction therapy. The longer the duration of alcohol use, the worse was the eventual outcome of intensive alcohol treatment. In addition, those with personality disorders were more likely to relapse during the four year period.

Personality disorders are behavioral traits and aspects of personality that are severe enough to impact the individual's life and level of functioning. Some disorders include passive-aggressive personality disorder, narcissistic personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder. There are several others. People with these disorders often have difficulty with relationships, job functioning and in coping skills. The coping disability is more likely to result in using and misusing alcohol in order to deal with stress.

Other factors, like family history, gender, educational level and age did not independently affect the rate of relapse over the four year period.
